Why ‘Latinx’?

There are many terms commonly used to describe people of Latinx heritage. Before selecting “Latinx-owned” as the inclusive, gender-neutral label for this new attribute, we did research, polled Latinx Yelp employees, and spoke to members of the Latinx community and groups such as the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and our partner Momento Latino.

Yelp for Business x Luminary fellow Tannia Ospina is an intellectual property lawyer who helps small business owners protect their legacies through her law firm, Ospina Law, in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. Inspired by her own experience founding an ecommerce business, Tannia entered the legal profession to help other Latinx entrepreneurs secure trademarks and protect their brand identity for years to come.
Business mission: “My goal is to empower Latinx entrepreneurs with knowledge and tools that they need to support their education and grow their business… Latinx business owners are also underrepresented in trademark protection. So through all my efforts, I’m really hoping that I can change that.”
Personal motivation: “In addition to being a proud Latina business owner, I want to make sure that I’m a role model and advocate not only for my children, but for other entrepreneurs, specifically Latina entrepreneurs, showing that our voices, our values, our contributions to society are invaluable and that our businesses are making a positive impact in society.”
Advice for Latinx entrepreneurs: “Our businesses are tied so much into our identity as Latinos. It’s important to be able to share your identity and your culture because I really do think that that’s one of the ways that you can make yourself stand out, embrace your heritage, and your values as a strength in your business. Let that guide you. Let that be your unique approach.
“My heritage gives me a unique perspective on the challenges that minority business owners face. That has made me want to be a more inclusive and supportive business owner through my businesses and specifically at my law firm because I want to make sure that business owners are protecting their legacies for future generations.”
How she celebrates Latinx Heritage Month: “I see it as a time to really honor our history, culture, and contributions to society, not only in the arts and in the music industry, but also as business owners. We have really amazing statistics right now for Latinx entrepreneurship, and we are really powerful.”
Yelp tip: “Through my Yelp Page [using the paid feature Business Highlights], I make sure that people know I’m a minority-owned business and a Spanish-speaking business… so clients know that I’m able to switch from English to Spanish fluidly.”
The business mentioned above was awarded six months of free Yelp Ads and Page Upgrades as part of being selected as a winner of the Yelp for Business x Luminary Fellowship. Tannia was not compensated for her opinions on Yelp products or features.
